Magazine Design and Layout

 Magazine Design and Layout

Magazine layouts are very important as it's what your audience see's throughout you magazine. The layout is how the pages in magazines are structured. There are many different ways to handle the layout of a magazine, here are just a few.

1: Mix in Textures

Mixing textures and artwork is a great way to grab visual interest in a magazine. While this image in particular is a cover pager, it can be applied to one pager while the one next to it contains the text, or applied in smaller amounts (such as images next to the text). Though this would be hard for a gamming magazine, it's possible given the right circumstances.

2: Subdued Images With Bold Typography

This bold font against the blandness of these photos is really eye catching. This attention on the page is a great way to lead in to hook or strong point while retaining the viewers awareness. This would be great from segments on games that have dark color schemes.

3: Contrast

Contrast is a great way to impress and grab attention in a memorable way. Taking an accent color of monotone photos is a great way to make the page pop and introduce seasonal themed games or downloadable content.

4: Product Images in a Perspective View

If you need to advertise a product one great way to do it is placing them in an perspective view, the audience gets to see the whole product, it is memorable, eye catching, and a great way to show off box art for a game.

5: Abstract image layout

Abstract images are eye-catching by nature, you can use this to your advantage. These types of images are interesting and can be used in clever ways to convey something important to your audience or talk about non-euclidian games.

6: Story Telling Through Images

When you do this, it leaves something fun for the audience to figure out and allows them spend more time looking at your magazine, plus it's interesting and memorable, espcially for story focused games like Final Fantasy.

7: Geometry

Geometric shapes are incredibly interesting to the eyes. This would be great for a single page image, especially for a segment on family friendly games, because of it's interesting, yet simple design. If you were to have a more complicated design you could match it a game that aesthetically fits the theme (like cogs for a steam punk game).

8: Vintage

Vintage things have wide appeal. Many people love things that are vintage, especially gamers, Games from decades ago can be rereleased because of peoples nostalgia for those games, thus making a vintage aesthetic viable.

9: Hand drawn

Images that have been hand drawn carry a special effect that can be enjoyed by anyone (as well as being interesting and eye-catching)

Contrasting textures.

While this is similar to color contrast from earlier, it is more about the texture of the image. It is visually interesting and has a ton of protentional to lead into something important.

Conclusion

Magazine layouts are complicated, however they can be incredibly entertaining and are necessary for success. The layout can get people interested in a section of a magazine if the images around it are interesting enough.
